4th December, 1936.
Dear Mr. Hsü,
Many thanks for your letter of December 2nd, on the
subject of Kowloon, which was handed to me immediately on my
arrival from Shanghai this morning. Almost immediately
afterwards I received a telegram from His Excellency the
Governor of Hongkong in which he asked me to inform the Wai
Chiao Pu that he was referring their representations to the
Secretary of State for the Colonies and that, pending
consideration by the latter, he was suspending action for
enforcing the removal of the Kowloon City residents, as he was
of the opinion that sanitary requirements had been sufficiently
met for the time being by the migration of those who had
accepted compensation.
Mr. Hsu Mo,
Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Waichiaopu.
Yours sincerely,
(Signed) H.M. KNATCHBULL HUGESSEN.
